Pergolas for Public & Private Facilities
Pergolas are typically designed as architectural features consisting of a series of columns that support an open roof of girders and cross rafters. They can be freestanding structures, or they can be attached to another adjacent building. Pergolas are typically used to enhance decks, patios, and outdoor living areas. They can act as a simple shade structure or can be used for other specialty applications, including as the framework for a common sitting area or dining space. Pergolas are commonly seen in parks & resorts, around garden areas, and in common areas of community centers, HOAs, and other establishments.
Thanks to our partnership with quality manufacturers like Icon Shelter Systems and Engineered Wood Structures, Carolina Recreation & Design can provide all your pergola needs. We also offer a complete assortment of shelter-related accessories and site amenities to make your outdoor area absolutely perfect!
Don’t Just Take Our Word For It!
Design Possibilities for Pergolas
Pergolas can be designed in a wide variety of styles, according to your particular tastes, and according to how you want to use your pergola at your outdoor facility. Here are just a few popular pergola designs:
Freestanding Pergolas
Because they stand on their own, freestanding pergolas typically require a minimum of four support columns. These structures create a defined space that can be placed pretty much wherever you want on your property, and be used as outdoor living areas, grill areas, seating areas, cocktail bars, gateways to garden areas, and much more.
Attached Pergolas
Attached pergolas are attached to other structures, so they don’t need as much structural support; these typically only require a minimum of two support columns. Attached pergolas help create a smooth transition from indoor to outdoor spaces, especially around decks, patios, and landscape areas. They work particularly well in applications including outdoor seating for restaurant patios, common outdoor living space in HOA neighborhoods, and poolside shade structures.
Curved Pergolas
While many pergolas are rectangular, they can also be crafted in other shapes, including semicircular and crescent moon designs. These work great in garden areas, grape arbors, amphitheaters, around athletic fields, and in other outdoor gathering spaces.
Pergola Swing
Who says swing sets are just for playgrounds? Carolina Recreation & Design also offers cantilevered structures with optional hanging bench swings. They make fantastic destinations for sitting, swinging, and relaxing in your custom-tailored outdoor setting.
When you partner with Carolina Recreation & Design, the particular pergola you choose and where to place it is completely up to you! We can install anywhere on your site, from shaded areas to full-sun areas, from patios to decks to concrete areas to garden areas. You tell us what you need, and we’ll make it happen!

Pergolas vs. Arbors vs. Trellises vs. Gazebos
Ever get confused about the difference between a pergola and an arbor? And what about trellises and gazebos? These four outdoor structural names get thrown around a lot and are often used interchangeably. Carolina Recreation & Design can provide structures that fit under all of these particular descriptions, no matter what you want to call them. Nevertheless, we thought you might like to know the “official” meaning of each:
Pergola
A freestanding outdoor structure composed of at least four columns and a lattice-style roof, or an attached structure with at least two support columns. Pergolas are larger structures, often used to create a shaded area near a pool, on a deck or patio, or in a designated outdoor living space.
Arbor
A freestanding outdoor structure that’s often used as an entrance for a garden or walkway. Arbors sometimes resemble the design of pergolas, but they’re typically smaller structures. They can be straight or curved on top, and often have a trellis on two sides.
Trellis
A trellis is simply a piece of latticework that can stand on its own, or can be attached to a wall, a pergola, an arbor, or a gazebo. Trellises can play hosts to climbing vines and other plants, or they can stand as decorative features on their own.
Gazebo
A freestanding structure typically consisting of a raised platform, low walls, columns, and a complete or partial roof. Gazebos usually round, square, or polygon-shaped, and they often include built-in bench seating around the outer edges.
