Rising Together for Safer Communities: What We Learned at SERC 2026
Our team recently wrapped up an inspiring few days at the 2026 ASLA Southeast Regional Conference (SERC) in downtown Raleigh. Hosted from May 29 to June 1, 2026, by the NC, SC, and GA chapters of the American Society of Landscape Architects, this regional gathering brought together the brightest minds in design, engineering, and infrastructure.
For Carolina Recreation & Design, the conference was an incredible opportunity to sync up with peer landscape architects to discuss how sustainable infrastructure directly impacts the places where our families gather and our children play.
Designing with Intent: Key Insights from Raleigh
In an industry that can often feel traditional and transactional, we treat our projects as collaborative, long-term partnerships. Attending events like SERC allows us to bridge the gap between creative architectural visions and hands-on contracting reality.
“The ‘Rising Together’ theme is really about the fact that a great park doesn’t just happen on its own,” Anthony said. “We talked a lot about how we build for the environment we’re in. When we’re looped in with site designers from the start, we can create spaces that function well and actually hold up to the wear and tear of a busy community.”
“At the end of the day, it’s about making sure public spaces work for everybody” shared Caleb. “We spend a lot of time looking at how play areas can be more equitable. For us, that translates to taking big design ideas and turning them into real spaces โ with solid, certified equipment โ where kids of all backgrounds and abilities can actually play together.”
June is National Playground Safety Month: Is Your Play Space Up to Standard?

Every June, National Playground Safety Month shines a spotlight on something too important to ignore: the safety of the spaces where kids play, grow, and thrive. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), playground injuries send more than 200,000 children to emergency rooms every year, and the vast majority of those injuries are preventable.
At Carolina Recreation & Design, we don’t just build playgrounds. We build them right with safety built into every decision, from site selection to the final bolt.
What the CPSC Says You Can’t Afford to Skip
The CPSC’s Public Playground Safety Handbook sets the standard for playground design and maintenance. Here are some of the critical safety components it identifies:
1. Protective Surfacing: The #1 Line of Defense
Falls from equipment account for the largest share of playground injuries. There are two options available for surfacing public playgrounds: unitary and loose-fill materials. A playground should never be installed without protective surfacing of some type. Concrete and asphalt under play equipment? Never acceptable.
2. Accessibility Play Is for Everyone
A truly safe playground is one every child can use. The CPSC emphasizes that accessible design isn’t optional; it’s a standard. That means accessible routes connecting parking and pathways to play areas, equipment with transfer stations and ramp access for children who use mobility devices, and ground-level play activities so no child is left on the sidelines. When a playground is designed with inclusion in mind, it’s safer, more welcoming, and more valuable to the entire community.
3. Routine Inspection & Maintenance
Even a perfectly designed playground becomes dangerous without upkeep. The CPSC recommends frequent checks of high-use areas, especially under swings and at slide exits where surfacing displaces fastest, along with prompt repair of sharp edges, missing hardware, and open S-hooks.
Our professional, licensed consultants guide you from concept and budget approval through permitting, general contracting, and the final safety sign-off. We manage our trusted network of subcontractors directly, meaning you get a smoother, smarter path from the initial “what if?” to the final ribbon-cutting.
Carolina Recreation & Design: Safety Is Our Standard
We take the CPSC handbook seriously because your community deserves nothing less. Our team designs every play space with CPSC and ASTM compliance built in from the start, not bolted on at the end. From site analysis and equipment selection to surfacing installation and inspection support, we’re your partner in creating play environments that are as safe as they are fun.
This June, let’s make sure your playground is ready not just for fun, but for the families counting on it.
