Honoring Our Heroes: World War II Memorial Arbor in Myrtle Beach, SC

Each November, as Veterans Day approaches, we pause to honor the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who have served our country. This month, Carolina Recreation & Design is proud to spotlight one of our most meaningful projects—the World War II Memorial in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

A Tribute That Stands the Test of Time

Carolina Recreation & Design was honored to contribute to this important community landmark by working alongside the project architect to design and install a striking steel arbor. The arbor serves as both a symbolic and functional element—a space where visitors can gather, reflect, and remember.

Crafted from ICON Shelter Systems’ powder-coated steel, the structure offers long-lasting strength, durability, and a clean, modern finish. Through close collaboration with ICON’s design team and the local architect, our team helped bring to life a custom piece that complements the memorial’s significance while enhancing the park’s natural beauty.

As President Dwight D. Eisenhower once said,

“History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid.”

We’re proud that our work on this project contributes to a place where freedom, service, and sacrifice are honored every day.

The Role of Arbors in Outdoor Design

Beyond memorials, arbors are a versatile and timeless addition to parks, gardens, and community spaces. These freestanding, outdoor structures are often used as gateways, walkways, or focal points for gathering. They provide shade, visual appeal, and even space for greenery to flourish—making them ideal for both functional and decorative purposes.

At Carolina Recreation & Design, we offer a full range of custom arbor designs, including:

  • Classic Arch – includes straight walls and a rounded, arched top
  • Moon Gate – wide arbor that looks like a half or three-quarter moon, with curved sides
  • Grape Arbor – resembles a small pergola, including a flat top which is well-suited for holding heavy vines like grape or similar species
  • Gabled Arbor – has straight sides with a pitched roof that extends past the sides—this is a more decorative option than the classic arch
  • Benched Arbor – not designed as a passthrough point, but rather as an anchor point for your garden area.

Whether you’re looking to define an entryway, create a peaceful seating area, or design a landmark feature for your park or community center, our team can help bring your vision to life.
