Project Highlight: Designing the Perfect Splash Pad with Carolina Recreation & Design
At Carolina Recreation & Design, we’re taking a deeper look into one of our favorite recent projects: the crab-themed splash pad we designed for Bluffton, SC. Splash pads are a fantastic way to bring communities together by promoting active play, social interaction, and fun for kids of all ages. These features not only offer a safe and exciting way for children to cool off, but they also add vibrancy and life to public spaces. Designing splash pads is always an exciting time, and this project was especially rewarding, combining creativity with functionality to create something truly special!
Key Splash Pad Features and Considerations 
When it comes to designing a community splash pad, several key components must be considered to ensure both aesthetics and functionality. The first step is determining the type of splash pad—in-ground vs. surface-mount. For the Bluffton project, we selected an in-ground system for its sleek and seamless look, ideal for the family-friendly environment we aimed to create.
We also considered the various spray options, from ground sprays to mid-level and overhead events. Each element offers a different type of experience and engages children in fun, interactive ways. In this case, we selected a variety of spray features to ensure a dynamic water play area that would be engaging for kids of all ages.
Upon weighing the costs and return, our team advised choosing a recirculated system that balances water use with environmental responsibility, considering factors like dynamic pressure, water availability, and retention and reuse. This ensures that the system runs smoothly while minimizing waste—keeping things both fun and eco-friendly!
For this unique water play area, our CPSI-certified crew members ensured a clean, organized job site and adhered to strict safety standards every step of the way. Our team installed the splash pad’s advanced water systems, connecting multiple features to create a dynamic play experience that’s both safe and sustainable. Once installation was complete, we provided the Bluffton team with a comprehensive walk-through, covering operational guidelines and maintenance tips.

The Bluffton splash pad is a perfect example of our collaborative approach to design. By working closely with our client and partner splash pad vendors, we created a feature that’s not only beautiful and engaging but also sustainable and practical. We’re thrilled with the results, and it’s exciting to see how much joy the community is already getting from this fun, crab-themed splash pad.
