Setting Sail for Play: A Back-to-School Playground On Ocracoke
Not every playground project begins with a ferry ride, but this one did—and that is just one of the unforgettable moments from this project. This summer, Carolina Recreation & Design set sail to Ocracoke, NC, to create a brand-new playground for Ocracoke School. Accessible only by ferry, this project brought together creativity, coordination, and a little island spirit to make it happen.
Working hand-in-hand with the principal and county, we designed a vibrant, sea life–themed playground that reflects Ocracoke’s charm and provides students with a safe, engaging space to play. From concept to completion, the journey was just as rewarding as the result.
And while the planning process was a joy, the real stars of this project were our crews. They faced a tight installation window ahead of the new school year—braving the heat, rain, humidity, and ferry schedules—to bring this playground to life just in time for the first day of school.
Highlights of the Ocracoke School Playground
- Ages Two to Five Play Area: Custom ship play structure, fun PIP (poured-in-place) rubber surfacing with colorful sea creatures, and a whimsical ocean vibe.
- Ages Five to 12 Play Area: Swings, obstacle course, climbing structures, and new PIP rubber surfacing with ground games.

Why Age-Specific Play Zones & PIP Surfacing Matter
Dividing playgrounds into age-appropriate zones is more than a design choice—it’s a safety and engagement strategy. Younger children (ages two to five) benefit from play structures that encourage balance, early climbing, and imaginative play, while older students (ages five to 12) thrive with more challenging obstacles, swings, and climbing elements that build strength and coordination. This approach ensures that every child has a safe and stimulating space designed just for them.
Poured-in-place (PIP) rubber surfacing takes safety and creativity one step further. Not only does it provide a softer, impact-absorbing surface that helps reduce injuries, but it also allows for custom designs and vibrant colors, like the sea creature inlays at Ocracoke. PIP surfacing is durable, low-maintenance, and ADA-compliant—making it a smart long-term investment for schools.

Beyond Recess: How Playgrounds Shape Learning & Growth
With back-to-school season in full swing, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on how playgrounds enhance learning. Across the Southeast, many states now require at least 20–30 minutes of daily physical activity in elementary schools, with similar laws also applying to preschools and childcare centers.
Outdoor play supports physical, social, and emotional development—helping kids grow not just smarter, but stronger and more connected. Shade, seating, and safety surfacing ensure these spaces remain comfortable and inclusive, while durable materials allow schools to invest with confidence.
